Kezia

April 28, 2016

‘Kezia stopped me in my tracks she has a truly beautiful voice, like Anne Briggs but Cornish’ - Neil Halstead

‘I think she is exceptional, one of the most original and exciting artists to come out of Cornwall’ – Ralph McTell

Kezia writes lyric based songs with simple, thoughtful melodies based around the piano and guitar. Growing up in an old, ex-mining town in Cornwall, she has always been aware of a shadow of something lost which fixes the place with a certain melancholy that infiltrates the way she sings and plays. Kezia prefers to write about average people with average lives and problems in a way that is imaginative but accessible. Drifting between Folk and Blues by the way of Country (with an English accent), Kezia hopes people find her music enjoyable and sincere.

Kezia has been asked to play some of the major festivals including Relentless Boardmasters, Leopallooza, The Eden Sessions, Fieldview, Galtres, Somersault & Looe Fest. She was asked to perform at Olympic Park as part of 2012 and has supported Feeder, Ralph McTell, Lucy Rose, Lindi Ortega, The Proclaimers, Glenn Tilbrook.

In 2014 she was personally invited to join Neil Halstead on his Spanish Tour ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’ as the main support act and to play keys in his band. She ventured to Holland in 2013 on a mini solo tour where her fan base is growing. Kezia’s works alongside world renowned producer John Cornfield (Muse, Supergrass, Oasis) and released her debut EP in Spring 2013. She is currently working on a follow up EP.

‘If one musician is worthy of a special mention this year it’s Kezia, the young singer-songwriter from Camborne who astonished all who saw her across Cornwall, with her mature voice and mesmerising performances. Shouts of “our own Laura Marling” aren’t far off the mark.’ - Lee Trewhela – Cornish Guardian

“For Fleece owners ‘The Blue Aeroplanes’ to offer Kezia a support slot at their annual Xmas gig speaks volumes for how much of an impression she made when she played at their venue in mid 2012. Kezia is simply one of the best singer/songwriters we’ve seen.”- Chris Sharp from The Fleece

Cornish Guardian What’s On Awards – Kezia – Best Female 2011 & 2012 nominated for Best Solo Artist 2013

Ronnie Jones Quartet

May 04, 2016

"We might live in the Devon countryside off the A38 near Totnes and rehearse in a pub in the foothills of Dartmoor, but over the past few years we've played at some of the most well-known jazz festivals in Britain.

This includes performing on the main Fringe stage at Cheltenham Jazz Festival (in May last year) in the heart of the world famous main festival site. We also played at Ealing Jazz Festival in London in 2014 and in November last year we played at Teignmouth Jazz Festival.

We have also been booked to perform at the prestigious Marlborough Jazz Festival this coming July.

As well as making a name for ourselves on the jazz festival circuit, we're also regulars on the west county jazz scene with several appearances at The Meeting House in Ilminster, as well as regular gigs at a host of smaller jazz clubs and other venues including a very successful recent gig at The Moon Jazz Club in Crediton, The Beehive Theatre in Honiton, The Brewhouse Theatre in Taunton and The Bayhorse Inn in Totnes; a thriving local music/arts pub.

We are also playing at the respected Chapel Arts Centre in Callington next year and later this year (in November) at Plymouth Jazz Club, which hosts top quality jazz acts at the Royal British Legion in Crownhill.

Here's some feedback from another of our 2015 gigs: "As a jazz club owner we look for a variety of things with talent and diversity at the top of the list. Ronnie Jones' Quartet delivers on all counts and with Ronnie's amazing drumming, the quartet performs to a high quality standard and should not be missed." (Andrew Knutt AIBA FRSA, Director, Creative Innovation Centre CIC, Taunton)."

Saskia Maxwell

May 05, 2016

“Imagine Billie Holliday, Joni Mitchell and Amy Winehouse on a three day bender, road tripping across the United States in a Chevy. Well, that is the sort of atmosphere this lady’s music provokes”

"Whilst recording with John Cornfield at his Cornish studio I heard some of Saskia's music. I was struck by the freshness and confidence of both the singer and the song... Saskia, a name to watch out for!" - Ralph McTell

Endorsed by Kif Wood guitars

Saskia Maxwell sings songs about love and loneliness, friendship and betrayal, fear and hope with stark coming of age confessions displaying a maturity and sensitivity that belies her age. Her songs are reflections on where she’s from as well as where she’s going; folky acoustic songs that echo her roots in the rural southwest are not out of place beside more lyrically provocative and jazzier numbers, songs that call out to wider audiences and bigger stages.

Born into a musical family, Saskia has always been surrounded by music and was classically trained on guitar and flute from an early age. She cites Amy Winehouse, Django Reinhardt and Kate Bush as musical influences, but her playing demonstrates a blending of many styles, all combined with an artistry both natural and unaffected.

Saskia has gigged prolifically from the age of 14, and has already performed close to 500 shows in the UK alone, supporting the likes of Rae Morris, JP Cooper, Nick Harper, Rachel Sermanni and Mark Morriss of the Bluetones. Radio stations have also been quick to recognise her both as a live and recording artist.
“Absolutely outstanding. One to watch.” – BBC Introducing

Notable venues in Cornwall include Miss Peapods, Princess Pavilions, Boardmasters Festival and the Eden Project. Between the Bristol and London regions of the UK, she has also played the Half Moon Putney, Brisfest, the Dot to Dot festival and has headlined many venues such as “Moles” in Bath and “The Fleece.” In Bristol. Saskia has just returned from New York where she performed shows in Brooklyn and Harlem and began work on her debut album, due to be released in late 2016.

Her 3rd and most recent EP, “Dancing with the Night,” has already received acclaim from Robin Banjeree, former Amy Winehouse guitarist, who highlighted her track “All the Fish in the Sea” as a track he would “not only listen to but buy.”
The EP is comprised of songs Saskia put together in Bristol, and sees Saskia gravitating towards her honest and unique form of storytelling. Unrequited love, obsession, various encounters and experiences are expressed over jazz style waltzes and beautifully constructed arrangements.

Nick Mears

May 12, 2016

Nick is an acoustic singer/songwriter born in Cornwall, originally trained as an Artist but decided to leave behind conventional education to travel the world, during which the focus of his career completely flipped. He began learning his new craft on the acoustic guitar, and has found himself playing shows in all corners of the world.

Since returning home, Nick has focused on playing around his native Cornwall, playing live full time, at Weddings and pub gigs, and running a few Jam nights with friends in different towns, where he has taught himself the drums, bass, piano and a bit of violin.

The next stage of his already blossoming career, is to get back in the studio, to record what will hopefully be his best work to date, and continue to live the endless summer with a whole load of live acoustic performances along the way!
